Questions

How many time zones are there?

Right now there are 37 different local times in use around the world, from UTC−11 to UTC+14. There are 24 "hour" zones in theory, but countries add half-hour and 45-minute offsets, and some go past ±12 hours to keep their islands on the same day.

Which places use 30- or 45-minute time zones?

Right now: UTC+10:30: Australia; UTC+13:45: New Zealand; UTC+3:30: Iran; UTC+4:30: Afghanistan; UTC+5:30: India, Sri Lanka; UTC+5:45: Nepal; UTC+6:30: Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Myanmar (Burma); UTC+8:45: Australia; UTC+9:30: Australia; UTC−3:30: Canada; UTC−9:30: French Polynesia.

Why do time zone lines zig-zag?

In theory each time zone is a 15-degree slice of the Earth, because the planet turns 15 degrees every hour. In practice, countries and states choose their own time, so the lines bend around borders. China uses a single time zone across the whole country, and Pacific islands like Kiribati jumped across the date line.

Why is it dark in some places and light in others?

Only half of the Earth faces the sun at any moment. The globe on this page shades the night side using the sun's real position, so you can see sunrise and sunset sweeping around the world. The line between day and night is called the terminator.
